An oil town with strong ties to Houston
El Dorado boomed with the 1921 oil strike and has been an energy town ever since. Murphy USA is headquartered here, a refinery and several chemical plants operate on the edge of town, and for a century people in the industry have moved back and forth between El Dorado and the Gulf Coast. When Murphy Oil shifted its headquarters to Houston in 2020, a number of local families went with it.
So the busiest routes from here point south and southwest: Houston, Shreveport, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and the Permian Basin. Engineers, operators, and turnaround contractors make up a good part of the people who call.
Getting a carrier to South Arkansas
No interstate serves El Dorado. The nearest is I-20 at Ruston, Louisiana, about 45 miles south on US 167. I-30 is some 75 miles to the northwest, and Little Rock is 120 miles north. Most carriers come up from I-20.
Plan on a pickup taking several days to a week to arrange, keep your dates loose, and expect the price to include the miles off the interstate. The roads themselves are not the problem. US 167 south to the Louisiana line is a good four-lane highway.
If you are in a hurry, meeting a truck in Ruston is an option. More carriers run I-20 than ever come north of the state line. Put Ruston’s ZIP code, 71270, into the quote form to see the difference. And if you are shipping to the Gulf in late summer, leave slack. Tropical storms can close I-10 and back up I-20 for days.
El Dorado Promise students
The El Dorado Promise scholarship helps local graduates pay for college, and they can take it to schools across the country. As a result, El Dorado families send students farther from home than most towns this size do.
For a campus a day’s drive or more away, shipping the car and flying the student is worth pricing. Book for the August move-in two or three weeks ahead, since it takes longer to get a truck here than to a big city. A student who is 18 can receive the car alone. Nearby campuses are a different story. Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia and Louisiana Tech in Ruston are both under an hour away, and those are trips to drive.
The square, the avenues, and the piney woods
- The courthouse square. Downtown is restored and lively, with angled parking, restaurants, and concerts in the Murphy Arts District that close streets on event nights. It is not a place for a car hauler.
- North West Avenue. The main commercial strip has the lots and the turning room, and most handoffs take place along it.
- The bypass. The truck route around town passes industrial yards and wide shoulders, which suits a driver coming up from Louisiana.
- Older neighborhoods. Tall pines and oaks hang over narrow streets. Expect to meet the truck a few blocks away.
- Outside town. Timber roads and oil-lease roads are dirt, and log trucks have the right of way in practice. The carrier stays on the highway.
We also serve Smackover, Norphlet, Junction City, Strong, Camden, Magnolia, and Crossett.
Camden’s defense plants
Thirty miles north, the industrial park at East Camden is home to several of the country’s large defense manufacturers, and their hiring has brought engineers and technicians to South Arkansas from other states. Many of them settle in Camden, El Dorado, or Magnolia.
Plant security does not allow a car hauler at the gate, so have the vehicle delivered to your home or temporary housing. If you are starting a new job, give us your first day in town as the earliest delivery date, and line up a rental car for the gap.
Turnaround season and welding rigs
When the refinery or one of the chemical plants goes into a turnaround, contractors fill every motel in Union County for weeks. Many bring work trucks, and some ship them between jobs.
A welding rig needs extra planning. With a machine, leads, and racks on the bed, it is taller and heavier than a stock pickup, so give us the real height and weight. Gas cylinders have to come off. Carriers will not haul pressurized bottles, and a driver who finds them at pickup will leave the truck where it sits.

El Dorado car shipping questions
How long does it take to ship a car from El Dorado to Houston?
Two to four days on the truck is typical. Allow several more days before that for a carrier to reach El Dorado for pickup.
Should I meet the truck in Ruston?
Only if speed matters. It can cut days off the wait and trim the price, but it is a 45-minute drive each way and you need a ride back.
Can you pick up at a plant or an oil-field site?
No. Plant gates and lease roads are closed to car haulers. The handoff happens at your home or at a public lot nearby.
My student is taking the Promise to an out-of-state school. When should we book?
By mid-July for an August move-in. Set the delivery for move-in day or later so your student is there to sign for the car.
Do you ship from El Dorado to Midland and Odessa?
Yes. It is a common oil-industry route. Three to five days on the truck is typical once the vehicle is loaded.
