Car shipping questions
Straight answers on price, timing, pickup, delivery, and insurance.
Pricing and payment
How is the price of shipping a car worked out?
From the distance, the route, the size of the vehicle, open or enclosed transport, whether the vehicle runs, and how flexible your dates are. The quote form weighs all of these for your trip.
Is the price I see the price I pay?
Yes, for the details you entered. It changes only if those details change, such as a different vehicle, a different ZIP code, or a car that turns out not to run.
When is payment due?
Payment terms are confirmed when you book. We tell you what is due and when before you commit to anything.
Does it cost anything to get a quote?
No. Quotes are free and you are under no obligation to book.
Booking and timing
How far ahead should I book?
A week or two is comfortable for most trips. Allow two to three weeks in summer, in snowbird season, around college move-in, and for enclosed transport.
How long does it take to get a truck to me?
Usually a few days. It is quicker along major interstates and slower in rural areas, where a carrier has to plan a trip out to you.
How long does the trip itself take?
Roughly one to two days for a couple of hundred miles, three to five for a thousand, and seven to ten from coast to coast. These are typical ranges, not guarantees.
Can I get an exact pickup time?
Carriers work in windows of a few days and narrow them as they get close. The driver calls the day before and again shortly before arriving.
What if I need to change or cancel?
Call us as soon as you know. Changes made before a carrier is assigned are usually simple. The terms that apply to your order are set out when you book.
Pickup and delivery
Do I have to be there?
An adult has to be there at each end, but it need not be you. Anyone you name can hand over or receive the vehicle and sign.
Will the truck come to my house?
As close as it safely can. If your street is too tight for an 80-foot truck, the driver arranges a nearby lot or wide street.
Can I put things in the car?
Plan on shipping it empty. Carriers are licensed to move vehicles, and belongings inside are generally not covered by their insurance.
Do you need my title or registration?
No. The driver needs the key and the owner’s permission to take the vehicle.
What paperwork will I get?
A bill of lading, which is also the inspection report. It is signed at pickup and again at delivery, and you keep a copy.
Insurance and damage
Is my vehicle insured during transport?
Yes. The carriers we assign carry cargo insurance that covers your vehicle while it is on the truck. Ask us for the coverage details before you book.
What should I do if I find damage at delivery?
Write it on the delivery report before you sign, photograph it, and call us the same day. The note on the report is what a claim relies on.
Should I keep my own insurance active?
Yes. Your policy should stay in force while the vehicle is in transit. Your agent can tell you whether it adds any cover during shipping.
How do I know the carrier is legitimate?
Every carrier has a USDOT number that can be checked on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration website. We check authority, insurance, and safety record before assigning one.
Vehicles
Can you ship a car that does not run?
Yes. Choose “No, it is not operable” in the quote form. The vehicle should still roll, steer, and brake so it can be winched onto the trailer.
Do you ship trucks, vans, and lifted vehicles?
Yes. Tell us about lift kits, dual rear wheels, racks, and oversized tires, because size and weight decide where a vehicle fits on the truck.
Do you ship electric vehicles?
Yes. Leave the battery around half charged. EVs are heavier than similar gas cars, so give us the exact model.
Do you ship motorcycles, RVs, boats, and equipment?
Yes. Those are quoted by phone, because the price depends on dimensions the online form does not ask for.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or overseas?
We arrange transport within the United States. Call the office about Alaska and Hawaii, which involve a port and a ship as well as a truck. We do not handle international shipping.
